Historic Places in Lake George

To stay busy on Lake George, you don’t always have to be out in the water. One of the best parts of visiting a new town is exploring its history.

Lake George was a critical territory during the French and Indian War, which was fought between England and France in the mid-1700s. While the war ended more than 250 years ago, there are historic sites in the Lake George area that preserve that history. You don’t even have to be a history buff to appreciate the history that surrounds you as you explore Lake George. This is a perfect way to keep you, your family and/or friends busy.

Chapman Museum

Visit Chapman Museum, located in Downtown Glens Falls. The museum features the history of the Queensbury/Glens Falls area. Experience the Victorian life in the DeLong House, enjoy the exhibits in the Carriage House Gallery (exhibits change 3 times per year), check out some Seneca Ray Stoddard photographs and maps in the Stoddard Gallery. And, of course, grab some souvenirs in the gift shop!

Fort William Henry Museum

Right in Lake George is the Fort William Henry Museum. Here you can step back in time and experience life at a British Fort in 1755. Watch live musket and cannon firings, play 18th Century games, and even join the King’s Army! Be sure to talk to British Regulars, Provincial Troops, and Rangers to learn more about Colonial America.

And what’s also exciting? It’s never too early for ‘Spooky Season’ here. Check out their Haunted History tours on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. Reservations are recommended!
